THAISEN RUSCH – Biography

Early Education

The Sri Lankan-born German tenor Thaisen Rusch began his musical education studying vocal pedagogy at the Institute of Music Tapiola in Helsinki (Finland) under Christian Hauschild and Maria Virmavirta, later continuing with Karl-Heinz Lampe of the NDR Chorus in Hamburg.

He continued his studies at the Conservatory of Lübeck and later at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, where he trained with Prof. Scot Weir and Júlia Várady. Rusch completed a Bachelor’s degree in concert and song interpretation under Wolfram Rieger, followed by a Master’s degree in opera performance, both from Hanns Eisler.

He further studied with heldentenor Reiner Goldberg and participated in masterclasses with Christine Schäfer, Irwin Gage, and Peter Berne.

Rusch was a fellow of the German National Merit Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes) and of the Richard Wagner Society Würzburg.

Stage Career

While still a student, he gained his first stage experience at Theater Kiel in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the world premiere of Neue Szenen, and as a regular guest at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin’s Schiller Theater, where he performed the title role in Das Tapfere Schneiderlein (Wolfgang Mitterer), Der Gestiefelte Kater (Cuis), and Ariadne auf Naxos (Strauss).

In the 2016/17 season he joined the ensemble of Theater Altenburg-Gera (Thuringia), where he sang Ernesto in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale (directed by Axel Köhler).

In summer 2017 he debuted as the Evangelist in C.P.E. Bach’s St John Passion in a staged production at the German National Theater Weimar (directed by Philipp Harnoncourt) with the Staatskapelle Weimar, conducted by Kirill Karabits.

From 2017 to 2019 he was a company member of the Staatstheater Augsburg, performing leading roles such as Phillip Gjurka in Paul Abraham’s Roxy und ihr Wunderteam (directed by Martin G. Berger), a production praised by Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Concert and Oratorio

Rusch is also active as a concert and song interpreter. His engagements have brought him to the Bavarian State Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Augsburg Philharmonic, the Beethoven Academy Orchestra Krakow, the New Zurich Orchestra, and many others.

He has appeared at international festivals such as the Shanghai Performing Arts Festival, Copenhagen Opera Festival, International Week Graz, Impuls Festival Graz, Kulturwald Festival, Festival Pfaffenwinkel, and Music Festival Potsdam. Concert tours have taken him across Scandinavia, Switzerland, China, Australia, and New Zealand.

Together with pianist Trung Sam (Bonn), he has performed Dichterliebe, Winterreise and Hölderlin Fragments by Hanns Eisler, among others, in venues including the Kulturcasino Bern. His broad concert repertoire includes Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, St John Passion, St Matthew Passion and B minor Mass, Britten’s Serenade, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Haydn’s Cecilia Mass, Mozart’s Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, and Ramírez’s Misa Criolla.

Ensemble Work

As an academist and later guest with the Rundfunkchor Berlin under Gijs Leenaars and Simon Halsey, Rusch performed regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic (Sir Simon Rattle), the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, and the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin.

From 2019 to 2022 he was a full-time member of the Chorsolisten of the Komische Oper Berlin (Chorus Director: David Cavelius). In numerous productions by Artistic Director and House Director Barrie Kosky, Thaisen Rusch appeared as a soloist – including Candide (L. Bernstein), La Bohème (G. Puccini), Der Rosenkavalier (R. Strauss), and the semi-staged production Mondnacht (R. Schumann).

Since January 2023, he has been singing as a First Tenor in the chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Chorus Director: Jeremy Bines), where he also takes on solo duties – most recently as the First Armoured Man in Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

In addition, he plays an active role in the chorus board, advocating for the ensemble’s interests. Among other initiatives, he successfully inspired Rolando Villazón to become an honorary member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin Chorus.

Teaching

Since 2022, Thaisen Rusch has been teaching at the Faculty of Medicine at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Jochen Röper, he developed the interdisciplinary seminar Find Your Voice, linking vocal practice with neurophysiological research.

He is also a lecturer at the annual Music Academy of the German National Merit Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes) (Artistic Director: Prof. Martin Wettges) and has served as vocal coach for the Children’s Chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In his private studio, he mentors aspiring and professional singers and prepares students for university-level vocal studies.

Biografie - Thaisen Rusch

Thaisen Rusch wurde in Sri Lanka geboren und wuchs in Deutschland sowie in Finnland auf.

Er sammelte erste musikalische Erfahrungen am Institute of Music Tapiola in Helsinki (Finnland) und erhielt Unterricht in Stimmbildung bei Christian Hauschild und Maaria Virmavirta, später bei Karl-Heinz Lampe vom NDR-Chor in Hamburg.

Er begann sein Gesangsstudium an der Musikhochschule Lübeck und setzte es bis zum erfolgreichen Masterabschluss (2014) an der Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin bei Prof. Scot Weir und Júlia Várady fort.

Weitere wichtige Impulse erhielt er unter anderem von Reiner Goldberg sowie durch Meisterkurse bei Christine Schäfer, Irwin Gage und Peter Berne.

Thaisen Rusch ist Stipendiat der Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes und des Richard-Wagner-Verbandes Würzburg.

Erste Bühnenerfahrungen sammelte er 2009 am Landestheater Kiel, 2012 an der Deutschen Oper Berlin sowie als regelmäßiger Gast an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden im Schillertheater, wo er unter anderem in der Titelrolle der Märchenoper Das tapfere Schneiderlein und 2015/16 in Ariadne auf Naxos zu hören war.

In der Spielzeit 2016/17 war er Ensemblemitglied am Theater Altenburg-Gera und sang dort Ernesto in Don Pasquale (Regie: Axel Köhler).

Im Sommer 2017 debütierte er als Evangelist mit der Staatskapelle Weimar (Musikalische Leitung: Kirill Karabits) in Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs Johannes-Passion (Regie: Philipp Harnoncourt).

Von 2017 bis 2019 war er als festes Ensemblemitglied am Staatstheater Augsburg engagiert, wo er unter anderem die Hauptrolle in Paul Abrahams Operette Roxy und ihr Wunderteam (Regie: Martin G. Berger) sang.

Daneben hat sich Thaisen Rusch insbesondere im Konzert- und Liedfach profiliert.

Seine solistischen Engagements führten ihn zu renommierten Orchestern wie dem Bayerischen Staatsorchester, den Münchner Philharmonikern (Musikalische Leitung: Christian Fröhlich), dem Beethoven Academy Orchestra Kraków, dem Neuen Züricher Orchester, sowie zu den Barockorchestern l’arte del mondo und Lautten Compagney Berlin.

Er war als Solist bei internationalen Festivals wie dem Copenhagen Opera Festival oder der International Week Graz zu erleben und trat in bedeutenden Musikzentren wie dem Shanghai Oriental Art Center, der Finlandia Hall Helsinki, der Gasteig Philharmonie München (Das klagende Lied / Gustav Mahler) und zuletzt in der Berliner Philharmonie (Weihnachtsoratorium / Johann Sebastian Bach) auf.

Als Akademist und freier Mitarbeiter des Rundfunkchores Berlin sammelte Thaisen Rusch zudem wertvolle Ensembleerfahrung und wirkte regelmäßig an Konzertprojekten mit den Berliner Philharmonikern (Sir Simon Rattle), dem Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin und dem Deutschen Symphonie-Orchester Berlin mit.

Von 2019 bis 2022 war er Chorsolist an der Komischen Oper Berlin (Chordirektor: David Cavelius). In zahlreichen Produktionen von Intendant und Hausregisseur Barrie Kosky trat Thaisen Rusch als Solist in Erscheinung – u. a. in Candide (L. Bernstein), La Bohème (G. Puccini), Der Rosenkavalier (R. Strauss) und in der halbszenischen Produktion Mondnacht (R. Schumann).

Seit Januar 2023 ist er als 1. Tenor im Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin (Chordirektor: Jeremy Bines) engagiert, wo er ebenfalls solistische Aufgaben übernimmt – zuletzt als Erster Geharnischter in Mozarts Zauberflöte.

Darüber hinaus engagiert er sich im Chorvorstand aktiv für die Interessen des traditionsreichen Ensembles und konnte u. a. Rolando Villazón dafür gewinnen, Ehrenmitglied des Chores der Deutschen Oper Berlin zu werden.

Lehrtätigkeit

Thaisen Rusch lehrt seit 2022 am Fachbereich Medizin der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main.

In Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Dr. Jochen Röper entwickelte er das interdisziplinäre Seminar Find Your Voice, das künstlerische Stimmpraxis und neurophysiologische Forschung verbindet.

Zudem ist er Dozent bei der jährlichen Musikakademie der Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (künstlerische Leitung: Prof. Martin Wettges) und war als Stimmbildner des Kinderchores der Deutschen Oper Berlin tätig.

In seiner privater Gesangslehrer betreut er angehende und professionelle Sänger:innen sowie Studierende in Vorbereitung auf das Musikhochschulstudium.
